Copyright Registration Fees & Modernization

The Association of Medical Illustrators filed comments with the U.S. Copyright Office in response to their October 17, 2018 Notice of Inquiry regarding Registration Modernization. The Office sought input on three areas of reform:

  1. the administration and substance of the application for registration
  2. the utility of the public record
  3. the deposit requirements for registration

The call for public comments on Registration Modernization followed a previous Proposed Rulemaking on New Fee Schedule issued May 2018.

AMI's comments addressed the questions and suggested legislative actions that could make registration simpler, cost-effective, and equitable for visual artists. Download PDFs of the full statements:

AMI Comment on Proposed New Fee Schedule (September 18, 2018)

The NOI did not contain a section or specific question about group registration options for non-photographic visual art. However, this issue is raised at the outset of our comment on dynamic pricing models. The AMI wishes to emphasize that the option of group registration for multiple published images for a single, reasonable fee should be available for works of visual art and we would welcome the opportunity to work with the Office in developing such an option.
